Fabrica/Copenhagen Coffee Lab

Updated: Jan 14, 2022

Essentially interchangeable coffee chains with good coffees, laughably expensive beans and tasty pastries. They've both nailed the current visual language of monochrome design, serif-less fonts and insta-friendly lighting, and will make your milk oaty or soy-ey for the cost of a normal coffee at any other place in Portugal. They have stores all over Lisbon's ritzy bits and staff inevitably speak to you in English first.

Honestly if you put me in one and removed all the branding, I couldn't tell the difference between the two joints. They take their coffee seriously, but having now lived here for over a year, I can no longer justify paying over 3 euros for coffee with warmed milk.

Bonus point: I hadn't actually been in one for months, so I thought I should try their offering; in the interests of research, you understand. I went to the Fabrica just off Libertade, and the flat white was stonking; good size, the coffee went straight to the pleasure centres and the orange chocolate cake was moist and not too sweet. These good people do not f*ck about. I was actually pleasantly surprised that this branch doesn't have wifi, something they get around by trumpeting the benefits of "conversation". Ha.
